Eidolon

Clip 2

At what point does idolisation become unhealthy obsession? This animation explores the extreme of this question as it follows a “stan” of a J-pop vocaloid idol. At the beginning, we are shown the unhygienic conditions this man lives in and get a glimpse of his obsession with “Xal,” the idol. In a play on a common anime plot line, the artist comes out from the screen and gives him a personal performance. The bright, cheerful song and animation make it easy to forget the unsettling beginning. However, as he is dropped by her, he comes crashing back to reality. The candies she gave him in reality are pills that litter the floor, her signature self-inflicted cuts, the whole experience, a drug-induced delusion, and he finally realises he needs help.
